2nd Annual RRH Turkey of the Year Awards

by: BostonPatriot

Thu Nov 22, 2012 at 11:00:00 AM EST

Thanksgiving at RRH means one thing: a chance to carve up the birds. Last year, we anointed Anthony Weiner our first-ever Turkey of the Year. This year, the competition is even tougher.

The envelopes please!

Honorable Mentions

  • Bob Kerrey: He came back to Nebraska to botch his campaign launch, generate a lot of talk, and lose Omaha on the way to a 16-point thrashing by an unknown legislator.
  • The New York State Senate Democrats: How many will caucus with the GOP? How many others will be indicted?
  • Joe Biden: What exactly was in his water at the debate?
  • Rick Perry: I'll tell you, there's three reasons he made the list...
  • Susan Montee: Peter Kinder made our list in 2011. Montee managed to lose to Kinder while every other MO statewide Democrat won, so she's an automatic Turkey.
  • Sandra Fluke: "You will pay for my birth control, and you will like it!"
  • Turkey Couple of the Year: Connie and Mary Bono Mack. At least they can now spend more time together at their home in Southwest Florida Riverside County Virginia.

Sex Scandal Division

Your runner-up is the junior Senator from New Jersey, Bob Menendez, because apparently the senatorial salary of $174,000 isn't enough to cover his annual hooker expenses. No fighter for the 99% ought to have stiffed poor Caribbean working girls as he did.

And the winner is.....Scott DesJarlais! (But seriously, Scott, please just go away.)

Corruption Division

Runner-up: Laura Richardson. For being smacked by the Ethics Committee, harassing staffers who cooperated with investigators, running out of campaign cash in October (what's the point in being corrupt if you're going to be cash-poor?), and not breaking 40% in November.

Winner: Ex-Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. This special ought to be fun. Can IL-02 make it four in a row?

Turkey District of the Year

There's only one candidate for this honor: Michigan's 11th, which was home to more Turkeys this year than most districts will see in a century. But who was the biggest birdbrain? Kerry Bentivolio, the reindeer rancher whose own brother called him "mentally unbalanced?" Nancy Cassis, who couldn't even beat Bentivolio? Syed Taj, the newest member of AULSID, who passed up the chance to be a short term Congressman? David Curson, who....well, Curson actually looks OK here.

Nope, it's Thaddeus McCotter and his staff for staging one of the most bizarre and clueless cases of petition fraud ever seen. (This, of course, after McCotter decided to spend a few months running for President and writing a bawdy sitcom instead of doing his job.) And to top it all off, McCotter botched his resignation on the way out and forced taxpayers to foot the bill for a needless special primary.

The Biggest Turkey of Them All

As with last year.....was there ever a legitimate doubt?

The Piers Morgan clip sums up the train wreck; Todd Akin gets the nod not only for his "legitimate rape" moment but for his refusal to save the GOP by exiting the race, and his bizarre attempts at "damage control." Richard Mourdock made a late charge, but Akin held him off to take home the Top Turkey honors.

So who did we miss?

I'd also give honor mention
To MO Constitutional Amendment 3 for a similar reason that Montee got one:

That amendment got only a little more than 600K votes (24.0%)
That's over 400K FEWER votes than Akin got.

Project ORCA
And the contractors and staffers ultimately responsible for that fiasco.

The folks who botched that we're supposed to be smart

What's the definition of turkey here?
Because, given that Biden at least tied his debate you would think that Ryan is the bigger loser for fighting at best to a draw and possibly losing to the Onion Biden he was debating.

Onion Biden
I like that lol.

Worthy of ridicule
To a degree higher than most politicians are worthy of ridicule (and let's be honest, most are worthy of at least some ridicule).

He really solidified his status as someone few take seriously this year.

Grand Turkey: Mia Love
This was for campaigning for Romney in Ohio, spending time away from UT-04 at the RNC, and then losing by ~700 votes when Romney cleared 2/3rds in UT-04.

From IL-09, familial roots in MI-14, college in PA-02/07, and working for the summer in DC-AL.

Andy Hill for WA-Governor!

Because this will cause a 50 comment derail
I am going to shut off any responses to this before they start, and instruct people not to bring up Ms. Love again until she is actually in the news.

Top 5 gobblers
1. Scott DesJarlais - Just a real piece of trash.

2. Akin. I have still yet to see how he came up with the words he did. I'm as pro-life as it gets myself, been active in the movement for years and I don't see how he even came up with those words. How?

3. Orca - Beached whale. Incompetence writ large. I'm not sure it would have made a difference, but quality control there was bad and diverted manpower and money away from what does work.

4. McCotter - I don't need to say anything.

5. Steve Schmidt - I don't need to take lectures from the worst presidential campaign I've seen since I've closely followed politics.

MI-08 - Chairman - Livingston County Republican Party Since 2013 - Opinions are my own and not that of LCRP.

Amen on Schmidt
Putting a GIANT stamp of approval on your point 5.

German citizen - Conservative by heart, non native english speaker

Turkeys of the year
The "skewed polls" people. Here and everywhere.

26, Male, R, NY-10

Scott Walker for President!

Another Honorable Mention
Jean Schmidt, John Sullivan, and Cliff Stearns for all being totally oblivious to the warning signs that they were facing a serious primary challenger. Silvestre Reyes as well to a slightly lesser extent.

R - MD-7

Does Charlie Rangel Qualify?
Though he won, which makes him less of a turkey than most on this list.

24, Conservatarian Republican CA-12
Liberals dream things that never were and ask why not.  Conservatives shout back "Because it won't work"

More Turkeys
Rick Berg for assuming that Heitkamp's appeal would go away and the state's partisan lean in a presidential year would pull him through, and not realizing that Heitkamp's appeal did not magically go away, until it was too late.

Denny Rehberg for assuming that his previous victories would translate into an advantage over Tester, and not realizing that the state's partisan lean would drag him across the finish line.

Lifelong Republican, TX-17

Rehberg did realize he was losing
And being sandbagged by the Libertarian candidate and Montana media. They just didn't have a response or ability to change the dynamic. Sometimes you just get outcampaigned.

Primary Turkeys

Jean Schmidt is a primary turkey for...

  1. not taking Brad Wenstrup seriously.
  2. being in DC attending Turkish-related meetings (IIRC) instead of being on the ground during election day.
Cliff Stearns is a primary turkey for...
  1. not taking Ted Yoho seriously.
  2. not spending even $30,000 more of that $2,000,000 warchest on GOTV operations or campaign ads in the new counties in the new FL-03. That would have been enough to overcome the ~800 votes Ted Yoho won by.

Andy Hill for WA-Governor!

Didn't see Shamlet's post!

Schmidt should have seen it coming
She barely won twice or three times in previous campaigns in a 55% district. A lot of people for whatever reason didn't care for her.

MI-08 - Chairman - Livingston County Republican Party Since 2013 - Opinions are my own and not that of LCRP.
