Hope everyone has a fun Christmas or whatever else it is you're celebrating. As the news (presumably) slows down for the holiday, the moderators are taking this time to think about possible changes to the site. We'd like to hear some input from you, our readers.

1. What kinds of cosmetic changes would you like to see to the site?

2. What kinds of other features would you like to see in addition to the daily roundups?

Thanks for your input, and we'll take any suggestions we recieve to heart as we explore changes.

1). Reduction to two columns. Roll the About, twitter box, and facebook box into a link called "FAQ" in the menu. Sack recent comments. This will make room for the search box and ads below recent diaries (you'll still see them frequently given the size of the threads and front page scrolling, even if it appears at first you're moving them to a less immediately visual placement.) Assuming you wish to keep Paypal at maximum visibility, put it in the currently empty whitespace in the top left.

Whatever you do, remember that simplicity is superior in web design (as it is in most things.) Usability should be the first priority.

2). Expanded focus to look at international elections too, even if as a clearly secondary priority.

Half the time I navigate the site that way.

For international elections, I'd probably prefer to keep that to the realm of diaries. Our moderators are great for giving insights about US politics, but do we have any specialists on international elections? If we do have an international section, it'd need to provide coverage that goes beyond what I could pick up with a quick look at Wikipedia and the Guardian.

It's not that I wouldn't be interested, but it'd need to be less "Which parties do exist in Israel?" and more "Is the surplus vote agreement between Labor and Yesh Atid a good or a bad thing for Labor?".

The links to recent comments is almost entirely how I navigate the site. I usually enter a thread by clicking on a comment that sounds interesting. I suspect I'll rarely go into the threads otherwise, though that might be more of a reason to ditch them!

2013/2014 Governor Races

This link provides some commentary about the races. I hope Scott isn't the nominee in Florida but even if he is, I don't think it will be most likely to flip. I think Maine will. LePage appears to be a lot like Christie but I think that style works better in New Jersey than Maine. Also, LePage has very poor approval ratings. Florida is more Republican leaning than Maine so that's another reason why Maine would be my number 1 state on the list.

Aaron Blake appears to be overeacting to the PPP poll that shows Snyder in trouble.  What he doesn't seem to be taking into account is the weak statewide Dem bench.  Their best possible candidate, Mark Hackel, says he likes Snyder and definitely won't run.  Mike Duggan is running for Detroit mayor.  Debbie Stabenow is getting older and doesn't seem interested in Lansing anymore.  Who does that leave?

Also incumbents don't have to be popular to win reelection comfortably - just look at Granholm in 2006.

I would put Michigan in the top 15 most vulnerable but just barely.

Who is Mark Hackel? Mike Duggan? Hackel and Duggan aren't serious candidates at this point because they have no name recognition. Heck, has anybody even talked about them running?

Isn't Gary Peters the most likely Michigan Democrat to run? I expect Peters wants to run for the Senate, but will run for governor if Levin runs again. He was obviously promised higher office for winning the black majority seat in Detroit this year.

He's been mentioned on here a few times.  I think Peters is the best Dem candidate; he's more centrist than Whitmer; she'd be better as a Senate candidate for an Open seat in my opinion.

Peters is more of a desperate last option
He lost the 2002 AG race to then little known Mike Cox despite Granholm winning the Governors race that year so he isn't a great candidate.

Peters also is no centrist.  He has been a straight down the line liberal Democrat in Congress.  He would get hammered by outside groups for his votes in Washington.  I live in his new district and received all of his campaign literature - trust me, he ran a hard left campaign to win a majority black district this year.

Recently he hired Kwame Kilpatrick's former chief of staff and convicted bribe taker Kandia Milton.  Last week Peters was named to a DCCC leadership position.  Those really are the actions of someone looking to stay in the US House a long time.

What kind of campaign did Peters run in 2010? More centrist because it was a more Republican district? Can he replicate that on the state level?

Also, what do you think of Whitmer?

If Steve Cohen can do it, Gary Peters can probably stay in a majority black district for some time.  Being associated with former Detroit mayor and prison inmate Kwame Kilpatrick probably won't hurt in a Democratic primary for a safe seat but would be toxic in a statewide run.

Peters did run a much more careful 2010 campaign and even talked about deficit reduction then.  He since has abandoned that talk.  You're correct that this was because his 2010 district was highly competitive and the new MI-14 is deep blue.  Part of why he hung on in 2010 was due to his Republican opponent, Rocky Raczkowski, getting sued by his former business partner in fall 2010.  Anti-Rocky ads hit him hard for this and probably made the difference in this race.  Other than being a good fundraiser, I don't think Peters is good as a candidate.

Whitmer is probably the best choice among those who can win a primary and are likely to run.  If Democrats really want to nominate someone whose has been elected to something larger than a State Senate seat though, they would probably have their best chance with Rep. elect Dan Kildee.  He doesn't have any voting record to pick apart, has a good last name, is young enough, has significant experience in a large county, has no skeletons that I can find, and is sufficiently liberal across the board to unify the party.  The problem with him is the percecption that first term Congressmen shouldn't run for other offices.

Mostly agree
But I think you're not giving incumbents enough credit across the board. A Governor (unless s/he has very low likeability like Scott or keeps stumbling like Purdue) has a lot more ability to rebound from a bad stretch than a Senator because they can drive news cycles easily on their own.

For some of these Governors
(Scott, LePage, Quinn, Chafee) it hasn't been a bad stretch, its been a bad two years. Incumbency is a great perk, but when you have Governors who have been -10 or worse since their first days, reelection tends to look grim regardless.

State law enforcement?
A better question is really whether a state agency has to enforce federal laws.  There is nothing requiring state law enforcement to enforce federal laws and vice versa.  Explicitly saying so seems like pure crass partisan politics though.

In Printz v. United States the Supreme Court upheld that state and county sheriffs do not need to perform background checks on firearm purchases as the Brady Bill requires.  The Court has consistently through the years backed the state's policing powers and has multiple times found that local law enforcement does not need to enforce federal laws.  The feds can obviously swoop in and enforce but local police do not need to.

The kicker as Ryan points out, is that the feds can easily withhold funding for failure to enforce their laws. South Dakota v. Dole firmly established that.

Here's. thought: why doesn't Abercrombie select Hirono to replace Inouye, so that she can get a head start in terms of seniority, while also getting the historic distinctions that she wants. Hanabusa could then be appointed to Hirono's seat on Jan. 3rd like all the other incoming senators.

Of course they both would have to run in special elections in 2014, but given how much of a stranglehold Dems have on the state, it shouldn't be too hard for them. Also, Hanabusa would be the target regardless, not Hirono whether it's just her on the ballot or both of them.

Why would Hirono want to run in 2014 and again in 2016 when she doesn't have to run until 2018? If they want to give Hirono seniority Daniel Akaka can resign early and Abercrombie can appoint her to that seat. This has been done many times.

They can play the office space game, but they don't get seniority over the rest of their class. And the office space game has become less lucrative with the reshuffling of offices after each election. For example, Scott Brown moved into Kennedy's office in 2010, but had to surrender it and move into a freshman office at the start of this past Congress.

A Senator can no longer gain seniority by having the retiring previous Senator resign early.  Inouye's death after the election does provide an interesting loophole, but I don't think the Senate would grant seniority in that case.

Golden Dawn was previously suing Dimitris Stratoulis (the SYRIZA MP who was assaulted) for defamation when he blamed the attack on Golden Dawn and said they were a party of criminals. I personally think he should resign ASAP.  I could forgive a youthful indiscretion back in the day when DUI was far more common and did not carry a social stigma.  DUI is socially unacceptable in 2012 America.

You guys are a bit harsh!
This is hardly a hanging offense. All the man did was have a few drinks at a Chrismas party and drove himself home! Was it stupid? Yes. Could he have hurt someone? Sure. But other than getting caught nothing bad really happened. There are A LOT of other Congressman & Senators who did a heck of a lot worse things than this and are still in Congress. Granted I would be quite happy seeing Crapo replaced with Raúl Labrador but unless another shoe drops this story is nothing more than a minor traffic incident.

You're missing the point,
our elected officials should be our representatives of how the law should be best, followed.

Sure, they are normal, regular people, but they should know the law better than most. We should hold them to a higher stander, imo, because of that.

This is a major mess up for him, and especially because he is Mormon, and they are to abstain from alcohol. We can't allow Democrats to even get close to taking this, and he should step down now, for the good of the party.

Also, as you mentioned, it shows a lack of judgement on his part, he drove, while drunk. He could have killed a family, grandparents, etc. That is not acceptable for anyone, especially our elected officials.

Hopefully the Republican leadership handles this correctly.

I get the higher standard thing
but this was a one-time deal without any extenuating factors. His BAC wasn't all that far over the limit (.11) and he doesn't have a history of this. It's a mistake and he should pay for it, but in the list of screw-ups an elected official  should make this is close to the lowest level you can get. People are generally willing to forgive.

It would be nice if we can shame him into retirement, but realistically this isn't all that big deal for him.

but the point that it was that low makes it even worse imo.

He should have known it he was intoxicated enough, that he could do something he wouldn't normally do, and if he had killed someone, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

This man needs to resign. The Republican leadership should come down as hard on him as they did Larry Craig. He could have murdered somebody with his actions. Not the behavior a person in office should get away with.

you best hope he runs again and Labrador primaries him. The IDGOP establishment doesn't seem to like RL very much and would probably muscle him out for Simpson or Otter in an open seat situation.

I don't think that there is any elected official in Idaho that can beat Labrador in a primary. You can't outflank him and Simpson and Otter definitely won't beat him.

but they could force him out. ID has a decently strong GOP machine, which Labrador only beat because Ward turned out to be a grade-A idiot. It's not all-powerful which is why nuts like Sali can sometimes slip through the cracks, but it did, for example, keep Chenoweth out of the 1998 race.

I'm sure part of the strategy is that Risch is not likely to last past 2020. Labrador would have the choice of falling in line for Simpson or challenging him and ticking off everyone else in the state party and being a pariah for years to come. If I were him it would probably make more sense to wait.

Plus Johanns was a former cabinet secretary, and Risch faced a sort-of-credible opponent in 2008. That earns them a few minor points. Crapo hasn't faced a seriously contested election since 1992, hasn't done much of anything notable legislative-wise, and isn't a real power broker.

Are people here, serious? Anybody over 25 who has ever drunk alcohol has driven with a 0.11. I don' recommend it but that level isn't drunk for most people. DUI is a misdemeanor, not a felony, and it's one of the few laws for not something you do, but what might happen as a result. He shouldn't drink and drive but people don't get fired from jobs for something like this.

and I would never say somebody should resign for one DUI. I've always been of the opinion that you get one such mistake. How you respond after that determines whether you are fit for office.

Minnesota Legislature
State Representative Morrow will resign to take a job out of state. This is a safe DFL seat in and around Mankato, and he didn't even garner a Republican opponent in 2012.

The company runs basically the same game model for a bunch of different country's elections.  Australia, UK, Canada, and Germany all have similar versions of it, and you can do US Senate, Congress, or Presidential elections including Primaries.

Though there are a ton of problems with it.  For one, Its entirely possible to abuse the primary process to snipe the other party's endorsers if you start with early momentum unopposed in a primary.  Running as Obama in 2012 for example, you can get endorsements not only from every Democratic officeholder but people like Walker, Kaisch, Scott, etc. just by spending points to sway them.  There are more but I have a Christmas dinner to get to right now :)
