Evening Political Roundup For May 18, 2012

by: SCRep

Fri May 18, 2012 at 18:00:00 PM EDT

Florida: Former Congressman Dave Weldon announced Friday that he will join a crowded field of Republicans seeking to unseat incumbent Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson. Weldon's late entrance in the race comes as Congressman Connie Mack is seeking to solidify his spot as the GOP frontrunner, having received the endorsement this week of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

Kansas: A federal court will take up the new Kansas Congressional map on May 29. The Republican controlled state House will make a last ditch effort to rescue the mapmaking process, but it seemed highly unlikely the Kansas Senate would go along with any plan.

NRCC: The NRCC had a good month in April. The NRCC raised an impressive $6.9 million last month and ended April with $31.3 million in cash on hand. That compares with the $6.48 million raised by the DCCC, it ended the month with $25 million in the bank. The NRCC is almost $20 million ahead of where it was in cash on hand at this time last cycle.

NRSC: The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee narrowly outraised the National Republican Senatorial Committee in April, bringing in $4.5 million to the NRSC's $4.25 million. The DSCC held a slight cash advantage over the NRSC, with $25.7 million in the bank to the NRSC's $21.6 million.

NY-13: Bill Clinton will not back longtime ally Rep. Charles Rangel in his reelection bid. Clinton has been a strong supporter of Rangel's in the past and Rangel was a key player in leading the charge for Hillary Clinton's election to the US Senate. However, a Clinton source said the former president "has a personal conflict this time around. One of Rangel's rivals, Clyde Williams, was a top aide at the Clinton Foundation and worked in the Clinton administration."

SC-7: A poll by Francis Marion University and SCNOW.com shows an overwhelming majority of likely Democratic voters in the new district said they haven't chosen a candidate yet. State Rep. Ted Vick led with 15 percent, Costal Carolina University professor Gloria Bromell Tinubu polled second with 9 percent support, followed by Horry County attorney Preston Brittain at 6 percent. A full 65 percent were undecided. The primary is June 12.

Weldon
Talk about stupid. I'm as disappointed with CM4's campaign as the next guy but Weldon is starting way too late. It's way too late for anyone but some sort of self-funder to lay down the infrastructure across such a huge state.

Plus even if he did somehow get traction, he's a much, much weaker nominee than Mack. All he's doing is making it a little harder for Mack to beat Nelson.

R - MD-7

why is he weaker than Mack?
they have the same issue positions, but Weldon doesn't have any personal scandals.
or do you only mean because of Mack's infrastructure due to being in the race so long?

Couple reasons
Low name rec, no infrastructure, and Terri Schaivo being the only thing he's known for.

I'm not sure
That Weldon would hurt Mack. I think he may pull from LeMeieux's support. At the end of the day, my gut tells me that Mack will end up with around 40% of the vote compared to LeMieux and Weldon getting around 15-25%.

Weldon's a pure SoCon
I'm guessing he pulls more from Mack, but you may have a point that he takes some from LeMieux (evangelicals that don't like Mack's drinking or something).

I'm crossing my fingers for us to get Tinubu as the Democratic nominee.

That would be nice
At least its looking likely they'll be a runoff here. Vick, Brittain and Tinubu all have a shot. Tinubu just received the AFL/CIO endorsement. http://www.earlcapps.org/

KY-04: YAL helping Massie
An email from YAL PAC:

First, just this week I mailed a check for $14,130 to the Thomas Massie (KY-4) campaign from the YAL PAC...

Secondly, in addition to your financial support for Massie's campaign, YAL's political arm is busy calling Kentucky's 4th district to inform voters about the issues. We want to make sure voters are fully aware and educated on our issues before they go vote next week.

And so far, our 20 full-time, YAL-trained, young activists have made 91,000 calls to promote our message in this race!

These hard-working, youth activists are calling Kentucky from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM seven days a week with no breaks. It's exhausting work, but their energy and commitment to the cause of freedom is truly inspiring.

YAL is what Students for Ron Paul turned into after 2008.

OH-Gov 2014
Cuyahoga County Exec Ed FitzGerald (yes, he spells it with the internal capitalization) is exploring. http://www.cleveland.com/open/...

I do the
same with my capital letter after my Del.  It is very common in Italian names.  Del, Von, Mc or some variations have meaning of "of the" or "son of".  Fitz means "son of" as well but as noted most people do not capitalize the P or G or other letters behind it.

Yep
but I've actually never seen it with Fitzgerald.

Neither have I

VA-Gov 2013
Chap Petersen out. http://hamptonroads.com/2012/0...

I'm thinking a Warner run coronation is looking more likely.

R - MD-7

I Agree
The good news is that I like our chances to take his Senate seat back.

[ Parent ]
If Warner runs
who does he appoint to the Senate? The only two obvious names are Gerry Connolly and Tim Kaine. Anyone else come to mind?

R - MD-7

[ Parent ]
Well
If Kaine loses I think its clearly him.  Otherwise Perriello or Connolly.

33/M/D/NY-01 DKE:Socks The Cat

[ Parent ]
Really?
If Kaine loses to Allen, do you really think Warner would appoint Kaine? I would think that Bob McDonnell would be licking his chops for that matchup. My guess is that it would be someone who is more like Warner, whoever that may be.

Petersen
From his statement (found by clicking a link at the bottom of the article), he's not running for any statewide office in 2013.

[ Parent ]
There's precedent for that sort of thing
Henry Dworshak (R-ID) was appointed Senator in 1949 after the guy who defeated him in 1948 died.

R - MD-7

[ Parent ]
Wasn't Kaine pressured into running for the Senate
by the DSCC/Obama? I would assume if he would lose, he wouldn't want to be appointed and then have to run another campaign in 2014.

By the way, if Warner runs for governor and wins, does he get to appoint his successor? I assume the answer is yes?

[ Parent ]
Yes
he does. And that's a very good point; I'd guess we're likely looking at Sen. Connolly (and maybe Rep. Petersen?) then.

R - MD-7

[ Parent ]
sounds good
I'd prefer him to be Governor (with a GOP legislature) and we have a much better statewide bench.

I don't see this as a problem. 2 small paragraphs on CW.

26, Male, R, NY-10

[ Parent ]
Not a problem?
Lifting text from another book without crediting an author is egregious. People work very hard on anything creative, sometimes taking years to complete it. And then someone else takes what you've worked on, puts in her book, and makes money off it. This is unethical and illegal. Even if it's only two paragraphs.

I'd sue if anyone used my copyrighted material without permission. And I'm not a fan of civil lawsuits.

The Ivy League and the GOP
If having gone to an Ivy League school makes a candidate worse in a voter's book, I don't think I want that voter in my party. If anything, having a Harvard MA/JD pedigree is phenomenal and should be looked upon in the highest of regards.

Shiny cedentials are way too over-emphasized in general nowadays. I'd look for hard work more than anything in a college degree; a STEM major from a state school would get way more points in my book than an easy major from any Ivy League school.

R - MD-7

[ Parent ]
I agree with this too
Personally I don't think that a Harvard degree makes anyone more qualified for Congress than someone with a state school degree.

[ Parent ]
+1
I don't care either way.

In my find; here in Missouri, a degree in Computer Science from University of Missouri or Wash U would be worth more than Ivy league for most positions in the work force.

The main reason is the points up from the likelihood that the hiring manager will have gone to either Mizzou or Wash U.

I'm not saying that a state school isn't a great education. I'm saying that if attacking a candidate for going to Harvard is a successful and logical attack in a voter's mind, I don't necessarily want them in my party.

Degrees
Agreed, attacking a candidate who worked hard enough to get a degree from an Ivy League institution is a dumb strategy. If that is the best attack that a campaign can come up with, then that person is probably not the candidate you want to vote for.
