IL-2: Jesse Jackson Jr. Resigns

by: shamlet

Wed Nov 21, 2012 at 13:46:40 PM EST

We knew this was coming after a string of health (and later, ethics) issues came to light:

Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. will announce his resignation from Congress "momentarily" in a letter to House Speaker John Boehner, Jackson's brother Jonathan Jackson said.

Jackson is likely headed off to the big house if the revelations of a plea deal with prosecutors are any indication. IL-2 will see a special election sometime around March, give or take. Possible contenders in what's sure to be a free-for-all primary include State Sens. Toi Hutchinson and Kwame Raoul, ex-football player and State Sen.-elect Napoleon Harris, and Blago attorney Sam Adam Jr. If the primary is crowded enough ex-Rep. Debbie Halvorson might have an opening as the Will/Kankakee candidate. JJJ's predecessor and convicted felon Mel Reynolds is also interested. Other members of the Jackson family are probably not likely candidates after this fiasco.

In this district, IL-2
I really wish someone named Leroy Brown would run

I am a Tom Rukavina Democrat.

Leroy has some ethical issues
Might be able to squeak through in the Democratic Primary though...

Baker '14
R, MA-3

[ Parent ]
But he has the name recognition
I think a little bar room scuffle would be brushed under the rug for a man of his stature.

I am a Tom Rukavina Democrat.

Leroy Brown
Isn't he known as the baddest man in the whole town? I hear he's badder than old King Kong and meaner than a junkyard dog. I don't think that sounds like a good congressman.

R, CA-37; hometown: PA-2

[ Parent ]
This district
Being a bad person is not a bad thing here.

28, Republican, PA-6

[ Parent ]
Yes
Leroy Brown would be the best congressman this district has had since 1980.

R - MD-7

[ Parent ]
So long
As he's learned a lesson about messing with the wife of a jealous man.

[ Parent ]
his gambling issues could hurt though

Age 21, CA-18 (home), CA-13 (college)

Law and Order Liberal.

Berkeley Class of 2015.

JJJ
Wasn't JJJ rumored to be a possible appointee to replace Obama in the Senate?

28, Republican, PA-6

That's what led to this
He evidently didn't bid high enough.

R - MD-7

[ Parent ]
Do we know that?
Blago was busted before he got a chance to hand the seat over to the highest bidder. He was arrested Dec 9, 2008. He didn't make the appointment until Dec 30, 2008.

Democrat, NC-11

[ Parent ]
I think he was trying to squeeze some more cash
out of JJJ and his fellow bidders.

R - MD-7

[ Parent ]
JJJ
Will he be collecting disability payments?

Democrat, NC-11

Not sure
I hope not, but Jerry Sandusky is collecting his state pension.

28, Republican, PA-6

[ Parent ]
Roll Call speculated a week ago that...
That his wife and former NFL linebacker Napoleon Harris might go for it.

29/Male/Married/Father of One/Republican/CA-3

Mrs. JJJ
That would be a first... the wife of a convicted ex-congressman replacing her husband.

28, Republican, PA-6

[ Parent ]
No it wouldn't
KY-7 in about 1928, I forget the name of the congressman but a Rep convicted of moonshining was replaced by his wife (who was replaced by future criminal Adam J. May). I want to say she had the initials KGL but I'm not sure.

R - MD-7

Dang it
I am quite shocked.  Now it was prohibition era Kentucky so its not surprising.

Katherine Langley's bio reads like a character on Boardwalk Empire!
Someone should option their story & make a move out of it:
http://womenincongress.house.g...

[ Parent ]
She had an incredible story
But I'm still shocked to read that Kentucky once had 11 CDs!

[ Parent ]
KY peaked out at 13
It lost its 12th & 13th seats following the 1840 census.
That 13th seat had only been given following the 1830 census.

Note to self
Always consult Shamletpedia before making these kinds of claims in the future.

[ Parent ]
JJJ's wife was an NFL linebacker?
Sorry, I couldn't resist. Your phrasing amused me.

Democrat, NC-11

[ Parent ]
LOL! I thought the same thing!

[ Parent ]
I had to read it a few times as well.

21, Male, Conservative Republican, TN-08 (home), VA-01 (college)

Gotta love the day before Thanksgiving!
After lunch on the biggest travel day of the year. If God set aside a time for resignations, staff shakeups, affair admissions, and other assorted bad news, this is it.

Mel Reynolds
If a registered sex offender ends up winning this seat then Barack Obama, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, every Democrat in Congress or anyone running for any office as a Democrat should be forced to answer how they can choose to affiliate with a party that supports and welcomes a child pornographer and child rapist as a U.S. Representative.

Don't get your hopes up
He tried to primary JJJ in 2004 and got a whole six percent of the vote. The only impact he will have on the primary will be as a spoiler.

23, Democrat, CO-4 (home), MI-12 (law school)

[ Parent ]
Reynolds wasn't much
But he was still a big improvement over Gus Savage.

[ Parent ]
"Goofy Gus"
And that was what sympathetic, African-American observers in the media called him.

I don't know what his formative life-experiences were as a child and young man. I daresay that growing up black the Detroit of the 1930s and '40s was not all peaches and cream. But somehow along the way, he simply lost touch with reality as most people understand it. I remember many of his outbursts in Congress during the late 80s and early 90s. The media tried to look the other way (some of the time) but when a member of Congress is flat-out crazy, there's only so much you can do. He was either deranged about white people, or else put on a very convincing act to that effect. I've never heard anyone say that he died, so I guess he might still be alive, perhaps peddling Jewish conspiracies to nurses in an old-folks home.

Age 44. Location: GA-04 & GA-05.

[ Parent ]
His official Congressional bio
says he's still alive at 87:

http://bioguide.congress.gov/s...

Maybe he can make a comeback. :)

[ Parent ]
is it mean
I want republican named Jesus to be on ballot? In this district he'd still get crushed

From JJJ's perspective, I don't get the timing.
Why do this now? He loses any leverage that resigning might give him in the plea negotiations and, especially since he has huge legal bills (&, no doubt, medical bills) to pay, why give up the paycheck before he has to?

Medical Bills were likely picked up by his health insurance

I am a Tom Rukavina Democrat.

[ Parent ]
Most, but not all
But not future bills.
